We do what we have to so one day we can do what we want to do.
turning the page in the Piper scrapbook…
Taken from the September 1984 Wrestling Scene we see that Roddy has switched from the Most Popular rankings to the Most Hated side of things, coming in at #2 right behind Kevin Sullivan.
We also have a brief clip listing the wrestlers he was managing at the time:
Big John Studd
Dr. D David Schultz (remember him? he’s the guy that beat up the ABC reporter in an interview about whether wrestling is fake… what happened to him anyway? Google here I come!)
Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff
Cowboy Bob Orton (yeah Randy’s dad)
Dick Murdoch
Adrian Adonis (oh how the world turns in the soap that is pro wrestling, as Piper would end up having a fantastic rivalry with Adonis down the road)
Cut from the Fall 1983 Wrestling Sports Review we have a fan mail from a chap named “Esaw” who writes in to voice his concern over how dangerous a wrestler Greg Valentine is ( I shit you not, read it for yourself).
He closes with the question, “Is there anyone in professional wrestling who can hurt Greg Valentine?” Yeah it was definitely a different era of wrestling, huh?
The other clip shows Roddy Piper climbing the “Most Popular” rankings getting to #3 overall behind Dusty Rhodes (#2) and Andre the Giant (#1).
Working every other weekend usually means that odds are I miss this show each year. But this year, the calendar has worked out to allow us to go. Can’t wait to get some new material and ideas to get that winter tying into full swing.
And so I finally get back to what I started a few months back. Today I give you page one from my 80’s Piper scrapbook. I just ran down the tale of the tape to get the book started. 235 pounds. Hmmm, even back then they were exaggerating wrestling weights.
Now my challenge is to keep up with this book review on a more regular basis. I think I can, I think I can…
